NAMI Metropolitan Baltimore Observes Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week

NAMI Metropolitan Baltimore proudly joins organizations and advocates across the country in recognizing Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) Awareness Week, observed this year from May 5–11, 2025. This week is dedicated to increasing public awareness and education about TD, a condition that affects hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S., many of whom live with serious mental health conditions.

Tardive Dyskinesia is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary, repetitive body movements. It is often caused by prolonged use of antipsychotic medications commonly prescribed to treat conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression. These medications can be essential to mental health treatment, but for some, they can result in long-term side effects like TD.

“NAMI Metropolitan Baltimore is committed to raising awareness around the challenges that often accompany treatment for mental illness,” said Kerry Graves, Executive Director of NAMI Metropolitan Baltimore. “By talking about conditions like Tardive Dyskinesia, we help reduce stigma and empower individuals and families to advocate for comprehensive care, early detection, and treatment options.”

Throughout TD Awareness Week, NAMI Metro Baltimore will share educational resources, personal stories, and opportunities for the community to learn more about this often misunderstood condition. Community members are encouraged to follow the conversation on social media using the hashtag #TDAwarenessWeek.

TD can have a profound impact on a person’s quality of life, self-esteem, and social connections. But with increased awareness, early recognition, and support, individuals can access resources that improve outcomes and well-being.
